Suggestions for the development of argumentative essays

Proposals for the development of argumentative essays

1. Select an argumentable topic, preferably that interests you, puzzles or calls to you.

Make sure your topic is neither too wide - something that ensures a dissertation - still limited. Decide what your goals are for the paper. What is your purpose? Which opinion, view or idea do you want to prove? Try to clearly articulate your purpose before starting writing. If you can not specify your purpose clearly, try to write about your topic free.

2. Make a position on your topic and form a thesis statement.

Your thesis must be argued; It has to assert or reject something about your topic. To be argumentable, a thesis must have a certain probability to be true. However, it should not be generally accepted as true; It must be an explanation with which people do not agree. Remember that a thesis contains both an observation and an opinion:

Observation + opinion (the "why") = thesis

A great way to test the strength of your work is to see if it gives a strong antithesis.

Common thesis pitfalls:

  • expressed a work as a fragment.
  • a thesis that is too wide.
  • a thesis formulated as a question. (Usually the answer to the question arises the thesis)
  • a thesis that contains foreign information.
  • a thesis that starts with me think or in my opinion.
  • a thesis that deals with a breastfeeding or foot output.
  • a thesis that contains words that lead to erroneous generalizations (all, no, only, only every etc.)

Discor write tips:

  • a thesis develops when working with your topic. Brainstorming, research, speak, and think of your topic before laying down at a thesis. If you have problems formulating a thesis, start your topic with freewriting. Your freewrite can suggest a functional thesis.
  • During the writing process, consider your thesis to work and be prepared to change and focus as you tell the telling and resizing your paper.
  • Copy your working with an index card and keep them before you when you research and write. If you have your work in the plaintiff title, it can help to focus your letter.

3. Consider your audience.

Plan your paper with a specific audience. Who are your readers? Are you definable group - designated observers, opponents of your view, etc.? Maybe you write to your classmates. Ask your professor or GSI with which you should consider your target group. If you are not sure, direct your argument for a general audience.

4. Represent clear and convincing evidence.

Strong attachments are for reasons supported by evidence. Reasons can be considered as important points that support their requirement or thesis. Often you are the answers to the question: "Why are you doing this claim?" An easy way to think about reasons is to see you as "because sentences". In order to confirm their reasons and to make their argument successful, they support their reasons with sufficient evidence.

The Guide of St. Martin to write (Axelrod & Cooper, 2. Ed., New York: St. Martin's Press, 1988) lists the following evidence forms:

  • Facts
  • Statistics
  • authorities
  • anecdotes
  • Scenarios
  • Cases
  • textual evidence

For most college papers, they include evidence they have collected from different sources and texts.Make sure you document your evidence properly. When using evidence, make sure you (1) introduce it properly, and (2) you explain its meaning. Do not assume that their evidence will speak for themselves - that their readers of their evidence they want from their evidence they see from their evidence they see from their proof will show. Explain the importance of any proof of how it explains or supports your point why it is significant. Build proof in your text and use it strategically to prove your points.

In addition to the use of evidence, thoughtful writers expect that the counter-arguments of readers contain counterparts of counter-expectations, alternatives, challenges or questions to their argument. Imagine the readers who respond to their argument as it unfolds. How can you react? A Savvan writer expects and addresses counter-arguments. A writer can appeal to counter-arguments by acknowledging, recording and / or rebuilding it.

5. Design of your essay.

How is the case with a writing, you should take your argumentative essay through several designs. Make sure when writing and revising your designs:

  • offer ample evidence that will be presented logical and fair
  • handling of the opposing point
  • pay attention to the organization of your essay. Make sure its structure corresponds to your topic and audience
  • Address and correct all Case grades of the logic
  • Insert proper transitions so that your reader can follow your argument

6. Edit your design.

After you have written a developed design, take the hat of your author and attach the hat of your reader. Rate your essay carefully and critical. Replace a design of your attachment with classmates to get feedback. Carefully revise your draft based on your evaluation of IT and suggestions of your colleagues. For self-assessment and peer response to your design, you may want to use a peer edit sheet. A peer editing sheet guides you and your colleagues by asking specific questions about your text (ie, what is the thesis of this essay? Is it argumentable? Shows the author sufficient evidence? Is the structure for the topic and the audience suitable?) .

You can also use in the tutoring support or from the dates of the writing preliminary in the student learning center.
